Foi breve a minha estadia no "Consultório" da edição portuguesa da Penthouse, ao fim da terceira ilustração, uma decisão editorial erradicou a secção da revista, mas fica a experiência de voltar a trabalhar em editorial.

Aqui fica a última ilustração que fiz, que saiu na edição deste mês, com o tema "Pisar o Risco" sobre tentações no local de trabalho.

My stint on the Forum of the portugues edition of Penthouse magazine turned out to be a brief one, after my third illustration, an editorial decision scrapped the section from the magzine, but it was worth the experience of getting back to work in editorial.

Here is my last illustration, which came out in this month's issue, with the theme "Crossing the Line" about temptations in the work place.

Uma das principais fontes de rendimento que tenho é o trabalho de storyboard que faço para algumas agências e produtoras aqui em Lisboa.
Normalmente é trabalho que é entregue e arrumado numa gaveta, para nunca mais ver a luz do dia.

Há dias, dei de caras com um dos anúncios que fiz há alguns meses no Youtube e decidi começar a caçar trabalhos que fiz para postá-los aqui no blog de vez em quando.
Aqui vai o primeiro, um trabalho para a TBWA Lisboa, para a campanha "E" da TMN.

One of my main income sources is my storyboard work I do for some agencies and film companies here in Lisbon.
Usually, it's the kind of work that gets shelved the moment it's delivered to the client, and it never sees the light of day again.

A couple of days ago, I ran into an ad I worked on a few months ago on Youtube and decided to start hunting down jobs I've done and post them here once in a while.

Brand New Nostalgia

Há umas semanas atrás, recebi um convite através do meu colega de estúdio Jorge Coelho para integrar um novo projecto, na forma de um sketchblog com o nome de Brand New Nostalgia.
O blog será composto por um grupo de membros muito talentosos da DeviantArt, convidados pelos mentores do projecto, Andrew Ross MacLean e Brandon Clarke e o objectivo é mostrar as interpretações que cada membro dá a temas escolhidos semanalmente, um pouco à semelhança do que acontece noutros blogs do género (vejam o que se passa em blogs tipo Sindiecate, Comic Twart ou Bristolwhip, só para dar alguns exemplos).

Para já, o primeiro desafio que tivemos foi criar um banner individual para assinalar a semana de escolha de cada ilustrador. A minha contribuição está aqui embaixo.
A primeira semana começa já com a escolha do Jorge.

A couple of weeks ago, I got an invitation through my studio mate Jorge Coelho to take part in a new project, in a shape of a sketchblog called Brand New Nostalgia.
The blog will be composed of some very talented members of DeviantArt, who were invited by the mentors of the project, Andrew Ross MacLean e Brandon Clarke and the goal of it all is to show the interpretations each member gives to a weekly theme, much like what happens in other sketchblogs (check out blogs like Sindiecate, Comic Twart ou Bristolwhip, just to name a few).

The first challenge we had was to create individual banners to be presented on our respective week picking a theme. My contribution is posted below.
The first week starts soon with Jorge's pick.

O meu colega no Centurie Des Convertis, Manuel Morgado fez dois videos do processo de cor das páginas que desenhei para o livro.
Depois de meses a ver tudo a preto e branco é interessante ver as mesmas imagens a ganharem outra vida com a cor.

Eu filmei partes de pranchas durante o processo de desenho, fiquei inspirado a fazer um video da minha parte do processo. Fiquem atentos.

My colleague in Centurie Des Convertis, Manuel Morgado, posted two clips of his coloring process on the pages I drew for the book.
After months seeing everything in black and white, it's interesting to see the same images getting a new life with color.

I shot parts of pages in the drawing stages, and this inspired me to make a video of my own with my side of the process. Stay tuned.

Ao fim de uns quantos meses a desenhar um projecto inspirado nos antigos Pepla romanos, eis que cheguei ao fim da viagem, e das 54 páginas que compõem o segundo volume de Centurie Des Convertis, a publicar pela editora Fauvard.
Obrigado ao Bruno Césard, argumentista e editor, e ao Manuel Morgado por me terem incluído neste projecto, e pela paciência e perseverança ao longo do processo.
Levou algum tempo a concluir e obrigou-me a um esforço maior do que esperava ao início, mas saí do projecto com algumas lições importantes para o futuro e um álbum que estreará algures em Setembro em França. Quem sabe venha a ser editado também em Portugal algum tempo depois.

Agora é tempo de lavar a vista e apontar baterias para um próximo projecto, já a carburar lentamente na minha cabeça.
Há muitas histórias a contar e muita vontade de voltar a perder-me num mar de pranchas.

At the end of quite a few months drawing a project inspired in the old Pepla romanos, I've finally come to end of the journey, and of the 54 pages which make up the second volume of Centurie Des Convertis, to be published by Fauvard.
Thank you to Bruno Césard, writer and editor, and Manuel Morgado for bringing me into this project, and for the patience and perseverance during the whole process.
It took a while to finish and it took more skills than I expected at first, but I came out of the project with a few good lessons for the future and an album which will debut in France sometime next September. Chances are it will be published also in Portugal soon after, we'll see.

Now it's time to rest my eyes and start pointing my guns to future projects, already slow burning in my head.
There are lots of stories to tell and a big hunger to dive into a sea of pages again.

Há praticamente dois meses que não actualizo este blog, o que por um lado é bom sinal, há pouco tempo para parar e dar notícias porque há trabalho a fazer.

O estirador enche-se de pranchas de romanos em fuga no ano de 64 dC, estamos na recta final do desenho, mas ainda há muita acção e drama para desenhar.

Mas como não quero deixar o blog sem novidades, destaco uma participação minha num blog dedicado ao universo visual de Jack Kirby, Kirby-Vision, gerido por Jason Garrattley, a quem agradeço o gesto.
O retrato do Darkseid foi originalmente feito para o meu blog Fistful of Fanart, mas assenta bem no meio de todos os belos tributos ao Rei dos Comics.

Outra notícia, desta feita má, é o falecimento de uma grande influência no meu trabalho.
Descanse em Paz, Jeffrey Catherine Jones.

Espero ter mais novidades em breve.

It's been about two months since my last post, which is in a way a good sign that there's little time to stop and share some news because there's a lot of work to be done.

The drawingboard is filling up with pages of romans in the year of 64 AD, we're approaching the home stretch of the drawing stage, but there's still a lot of action and drama to sketch out.

But I don't want to leave the blog newsless, so I'm pointing out a little entry of mine on a blog dedicated to the visual universe of Jack Kirby, Kirby_Vision, run by Jason Garrattley, to whom I thank for the gesture.
The portrait of Darkseid was done for my blog Fistful of Fanart, but it fits nicely among the great tributes to the King of Comics.

Another piece of news, this time one of the bad kind, is the passing of a big influence in my own work.
Rest on Peace, Jeffrey Catherine Jones.

I hope to bring you more good news real soon.

Static: Redesign of the Cool

Há umas semanas, assinalei a morte do argumentista Dwayne McDuffie no blog Fistful of Fanart com um redesign de um dos seus personagens mais emblemáticos, Static, que submeti ao mesmo tempo para um evento a passar-se no site Project:Rooftop.

Esta semana foi a semana McDuffie no P:R e a minha entrada figurou na imensa lista de tributos a umas das mentes mais produtivas dos comics e animação americanas.

A few weeks ago, I marked the death of writer Dwayne McDuffie on the blog Fistful of Fanart with a redesign of one of his most emblematic characters, Static, which I also submitted to and event taking place on the site Project:Rooftop.

This week was McDuffie week on P:R and my entry was one among many tributes to one of the most productive minds in american comics and animation.

Fazendo 33 anos hoje, pensei em colocar aqui uma história curta sobre a minha vida com um lápis na mão, que fiz o ano passado para a exposição colectiva do TLS no passado mês de Maio.
Já são uns anos a traçar linhas e sonhos.
E ainda a viagem vai a meio.
Vamos ver onde nos leva.

Today I'm 33 years old, so I thought about posting a little short story about my life with a pencil on my hand that I did for the collective exhibition of the TLS in Beja last May.
I've been sketching lines and dreams for a good amount of years now.
And we're still halfway through this journey.
Let's see where it takes us.

"It"

When I started making comics, I always worked in that Hugo Pratt method, working in order, from page one onward, going panel by panel until the thing was done. This evolved into an assembly line procedure during the making of the original THB series, where I'd pencil, letter, ink and finish 16 pages at a time, using those two rows of eight as if they were a gigantic comics tableau. This is the most effective method for producing comics I know of, resulting in my being able to finish seventy completely print ready pages in one month, my most productive month ever.
My interest level for given images fluctuates throughout a work period, say, a month and I find it easier to work on many pages at once. Also, as my schedule became more hectic, I had no choice but to work on more than one project at once. That way is like skipping rope. I woke up that morning after Jenn's party knowing I'd worn my time down to a little wire, until it was as if a command from above announced, "You will quit fooling around, you will chain yourself to your drawing board and finish the fucking thing!"
Despite that, I didn't have "it" that day. "It" is that precious quantity which lets you make artwork which is better than good and sometimes "it" allows for work which is truly inspired, but I learned from working on monthly deadlines for Kodansha and Dark Horse, you couldn't depend on "it". I was capricious and wispy, disappearing for periods of time, sometimes only half returning, or returning for only half as long as you want it. It's also a problem to create work on deadlines without "it". That is a killer. Too much of that kind of thing will beat you into a peculiar kind of self-loathing, hard to describe, but which makes your face in the mirror unbearable for yourself to look at. But you can get "it" to come and stay with you when you have great discipline and work hard without distractions. That is why I like working for three days straight.
Those first few pages of Escapo are pure "it", and that set a standard I had to follow, which meant to keep on working until "it" came back, which "it" always does eventually. When I'm most discouraged and begin thinking I have no talent at all, I recognize that as the lowest point of the process of making art and ride it out. Looking back on Kirby's work, or Toth's, they seemed to always had "it", even in their obvious mistakes and sloppy work. I get mad at myself, then, for the vain luxury of complaint. You have no excuse, I say, or something in me says. You live in a part of the world where you can do just about anything you want. Not everything but anything. No one is firing mortar shells at your block. There are no attack dogs, no mustard gases are ruining you. No one is poaching you for your tusks. You've got no excuse. So I try brewing coffee, then change the music on the CD player. Nothing helps. So I leave my place. I don't do laundry, which is dirty and shoved into a narrow crevice in my closet. I don't do my dishes, dirty and even dusty in my sink. I don't pay the bills, in their eternally replenishing stack by the mailslot. I don't put gas in my car, which is always on empty. Instead, then, as I do now, when the deadline stress is too great, i wait until I'm hungry, then, go eat Indian food.
That day, I called Scott and we went to this place called Taj Mahal to eat Chicken Tikka Masala, spicy, with Naan, no butter. Aloo Matar, and Raita. Mint chutney, too. Lamb Korma, or a sizzling Tandoori platter. Or spicy curry chicken. And Chai or a King Fisher, or a Flying Horse. No dessert. Not long after he and I started working together, we established this custom of eating a big Indian dinner as we were about to enter a serious deadline period. This ritual is intended to brace yo for the hard week ahead, and let you celebrate it, too.
After all, deadlines are a part of this lifestyle, take it or leave it. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. And if you sometimes take a week, or even two, off and do absolutely nothing, you only really steal from some other week yet to come, and regardless, every third of fourth week seems to be this sleepless, fitful, awful deadline time, with fifteen hour a day work weeks. And you must learn to love this. It's your lot, your wife, your price. You must learn to love this stress and learn to how to burn with it, not be burnt by it, otherwise it is a miserable servitude without much recompense.
This is your garden, now cultivate it.

Começou tremido e acaba no meio de muito trabalho, como algumas boas perspectivas para o ano que chega.
Por agora, resta arrumar este ano na memória com uma noite de festa e alegria.
O que vem a seguir, logo se enfrenta.

Bom Ano a todos.
Encontramo-nos em 2011.

2010 was one of those years with hard to explain highs and lows.
It started shaky and it ends in the midst of a lot of work, with some good perspectives for the coming year.
For now, all it's left is to put this year to rest in my memory with a night of happy partying.

Penthouse Magazine

Tenho uma ilustração na nova edição portuguesa da revista Penthouse. A ilustração abaixo acompanha um artigo sobre a Igreja de Satanás do ínfame Anton Szandor LaVey, um artigo adaptado da edição original por sua vez ilustrado nem mais nem menos do que pela lenda Coop.

Obrigado ao Basílio Santos e ao pessoal da Penthouse pelo convite.
Esta edição tem o interesse extra de ter trabalhos de mais dois ilustradores do TLS, Patrícia Furtado e Jorge Coelho.

I have a illustration in the new portuguese edition of Penthouse magazine. The illustration below accompanies an article about the Church of Satan of the infamous Anton Szandor LaVey, an article adapted from the original edition in its turn illustrated by none other than the legend Coop.

Thanks to Basílio Santos and the guys at Penthouse for the invite.
Thsi edition has the extra interest of having the works of two other TLS illustrators, Patrícia Furtado and Jorge Coelho.

Fistful of Fanart

Como se já não tivesse coisas de sobra para fazer, dei corpo a uma ideia que nasceu mais ou menos durante a viagem à NY Comiccon em Outubro.
A ideia era juntar os talentos de todos e fazer o que fazemos normalmente nos nossos blogs pessoais para mostrar o nosso trabalho, para aquecer a mão, ou simplesmente por diversão, que é desenhar pin-ups ou esboços de personagens existentes, algumas clássicas, outras obscuras, mas normalmente favoritas de tudo o que lemos durante as nossas vidas como bedéfilos.

O resultado é o blog Fistful of Fanart, que para já conta com as contribuições do grande Jorge Coelho e uma minha.
Todas as semanas, uma nova entrada de um artista diferente irá atacar personagens mais ou menos conhecidas de todos.
Aqui fica a minha entrada para esta semana.

As if I didn't have enough stuff to do, I've given life to an idea that sort of was born during the last trip to the Ny Comiccon in October.
The idea was to assemble all our talents and do what we normally do on our personal blogs to show our work, as warm-ups, or simply for fun, which is to draw pin-ups and sketches of existing characters, some classic, others obscure, but normally favorites of everything we read during our lives as comic book lovers.

The end result is the blog Fistful of Fanart, that has started off with a contribution from the great Jorge Coelho and from me.
Once a week, a new entry from a different artist will tackle characters more or less known by all.
Here's my entry for this week.

Kid Kthulu

Fan art de Kid Kthulu, uma personagem de Thomas Perkins, um concept designer e ilustrador com um talento descomunal e uma simpatia ainda maior.
Ele tem feito nos últimos tempos um exercício de capas para comics imaginários que eu adorava ver em papel no futuro próximo. É incrível como gente talentosa faz coisas mais interessantes numa brincadeira do que a maior dos profissionais faz em trabalho a sério.

Ele faz anos hoje, vão dar-lhe os parabéns.

Fan art of Kid Kthulu, a character by Thomas Perkins, a concept designer and illustrator with a phenomenal talent and a very nice guy.
He's been doing an exercise in recent months of posting covers for imaginary commics which I'd love to see come to life in a near future. It's incredible how talented people do stuff for fun that's way more interesting than most professionals do in real jobs.

It's his birthday, go congratulate him.

Post-NYCC Chill

Acabou a 2ª aventura por Nova Iorque e já estou de volta a casa para absorver tudo o que se passou e cair de cabeça no trabalho mais uma vez.
Como a outra experiência, esta viagem foi rápida e bastante preenchida (até um pouco caótica às vezes), mas os objectivos iniciais foram cumpridos.

Pontos altos da convenção:
- ter o trabalho que apresentei bem recebido por público e editores;
- encontrar novos e velhos amigos no Artist Alley;
- poder espiar o trabalho do Adam Hughes que estava sentado nas nossas costas no Artist Alley;
- passar os dias na convenção a desenhar commissions;
- anotar lições para futuras convenções;

Obrigado a todos os que apareceram nas mesas R-17/18, que viram e gostaram do nosso trabalho, que pediram desenhos e prints e gastaram do vosso tempo de convenção a conhecer-nos um pouco melhor. Espero voltar a encontrá-los brevemente no mesmo sítio. Vocês fizeram a nossa convenção.

De volta à base, o trabalho nos meus projectos continua e o embalo ganho durante a NYCC tem que ser mantido.
Há ideias para escrever, desenhos para fazer e muita página de BD pela frente nos próximos meses.

The 2nd adventure in New York is over and I'm back home absorbing everything and falling into the grind once more.
Like the previous experience, this trip was fast and full (even chaotic at times), but the initial goals were accomplished.

Highnotes of the convention:
- having the work I showed there well accepted by editors and passers-by:
- finding new and old friends at Artist Alley;
- get to spy on Adam Hughes' work, as he had his table right behind ours;
- spending the con days drawing commissions;
- getting tips for the next conventions;

Thank you to all of you who dropped by tables R-17/18, who saw and liked our work, who asked for our sketches and prints, and who spent a little of their convention time to get to know us better. I hope I'm able to catch you at the same place very soon. You made our convention.

Back to my base, the work on my projects continues and the momentum gained at NYCC has to hold up.

NY Comic Con 2010

O tempo está quase no fim para ter tudo pronto para a NY Comic Con, e finalmente acabei o material que queria levar para a convenção.
Os dias têm sido de stress, correria, preparações, constipações, e muito muito trabalho, com algum gozo de ver ideias a crescer à mistura.

Entretanto, saíram as colocações das mesas no Artist Alley, e eu e o resto da secção portuguesa da Con vamos estar nas mesas R-17 e R-18.
Apareçam por lá para ver o nosso trabalho, dizer olá e conversar connosco.
Vamos ter prints, originais e as habituais "commissions" à venda nas mesas.

Este será provavelmente o último post antes da viagem, por isso, aqui ficam abaixo algumas imagens que podem encontrar por lá.
Mais novidades no regresso.

Time is running out to have everything ready for the NY Comic Con, and I've finally wrapped up the material I want to bring with me.
The last few days have been filled with stress, running around, colds, and lots and lots of work, with a good dose of fun watching your ideas come alive.

In the meantime, the table numbers for Artist Alley are out, and me and the portuguese comittee will be sitting at tables R-17 and R-18.
Drop by to check out our work, say hi and hang out with us.
We'll have prints, originals and the usual commissions for sale at our tables.

This will probably be the last post before the trip, so here are some of the images you should look for at Artist Alley this year.

Setembro está à porta e mais uma vez esta parece ser sempre a altura mais caótica e stressante do ano para mim.
Há muita coisa a acontecer, muita para acontecer, muito trabalho que teima em não avançar em cima do estirador e uma tremenda moleza do calor que ainda se faz sentir em Lisboa.

No meio do rebuliço do trabalho, consegui encaixar umas submissões para o Project Rooftop enquadradas num post chamado "Heroes In Need".
As submissões estão a demorar a aparecer no site (se é que vão aparecer), mas como este blog precisa de alguma arte nova, aqui vão.
As minhas reintrepretações do Fantasma de Lee Falk e da personagem da DC Firestorm (Nuclear na versão brasileira, se a memória não me falha).

September is right around the corner and once again this appears to be the most chaotic and stressful time of the year for me.
There's a lot happening, a lot about to happen, a lot of work which insists on hanging around my drawing table and a fierce dullness stemed from the heat that still haunts Lisbon.

In the midst of all the hussle, I managed to squeeze a couple of submissions to Project Rooftop concerning a post called "Heroes In Need".
These submissions haven't been posted on the site yet (if they're going to be posted at all) but since this blog needs some new art, here they go.

De volta a Lisboa depois de 5 dias em Madrid e é tempo de fazer contas ao trabalho que aí vem.
Agosto não vai ser mês de férias, como não tem sido nos últimos anos, por isso, tenho que esquecer o calor e a praia e enterrar a cabeça no desenho se quero colher alguns frutos nos meses que se aproximam.
Em cima da mesa está um projecto para França, separações de cores para o meu buddy Nuno Plati, material para o TLS Mag #2, e umas quantas curtas para levar a Nova Iorque à ComicCon deste ano, se tudo correr bem.
Muito para fazer e muito em que pensar nas próximas semanas.

Back to Lisbon after 5 days in Madrid and it’s time to plan for the jobs I have lined up.
August will not be a vacation month, as it hasn’t been for a while, so I have to get the heat and the beach out of my mind and bury my head on the drawing board if I want to reap some rewards in the months to come.
On the table right now is a project for France (sorry for the delay Bruno), color separations for my buddy Nuno Plati, stuff for the TLS Mag #2, and a couple short stories I’m planning on taking to the NY ComicCon this year, if all goes well.
Lots to do and lots to think about in the weeks ahead.

Tempo de recarregar baterias.

Depois de uns meses de trabalho intenso a saltar de storyboard para concepts para ilustrações e exposições, fiquei a sentir-me gasto em ideias e destreza de desenho, o que me tem atrasado alguns compromissos e projectos que tenho em curso, por isso, esta é uma boa altura para parar e respirar fora do meu ambiente natural.

Assim, os próximos dias vou estar a percorrer as ruas de Madrid, a ver museus, monumentos, esplanadas e tudo o mais que a capital vizinha puder oferecer em 4 dias.

Entretanto, estou a colorir a curta que tive exposta na colectiva do TLS em Beja e que pode ou não entrar na 2ª edição do The Lisbon Studio Mag, já em produção.
Mais novidades em breve.

Time to recharge batteries.

After a couple of months of intense work jumping from storyboard to concepts to illustrations to exhibits, I ended up feeling spent on ideas and drawing sharpness, which has delayed some commitments and projects I have coming up, so it's a good time to stop for a quick breath outside of my natural environment.

So, in the next few days, I'll be walking up and down the streets of Madrid, seeing museums, monuments, squares, and whatever the neighbouring capital has to offer in 4 days.

Meanwhile, I've been working on the colors of the short story I did for the exhibit we did in Beja, which may or may not appear on the 2nd issue of the The Lisbon Studio Mag.
More news in the future.

Passada a ressaca do Festival de Beja, mais um fim de semana lisboeta com os manos Bá e Moon com muita conversa, snooker e cheiro a sardinha no ar, estou de volta ao trabalho, tentando fechar pontas soltas para começar novas aventuras, felizmente todas envolvendo BD.
Mais detalhes a revelar no futuro.

Through with the Beja Festival hangover, plus a Lisbon weekend with the brothers Bá and Moon filled with talks, snooker and the smell of sardines in the air, I'm back to work, trying to close up some loose ends and start new adventures, happily all of them envolving Comics.
More details to be revealed in future posts.

Estamos de volta do Festival de Beja e de volta ao trabalho.
Foi um fim de semana bem passado, apesar de um pouco stressante e trabalhoso a montar a exposição.

Exposição essa que ficou muito boa. O nosso Mag #1 foi lançado como previsto e deu ainda para ver boas exposições, falar com novos e velhos amigos, e comer muito e bem.

Pessoalmente, a viagem ao festival ficou marcada por uma sensação de que tenho ainda muitas pranchas pela frente e muito para evoluir, especialmente conversando com pessoas como os irmãos Moon e Bá, que respiram e transpiram arte sequencial a toda a hora.
Eu respiro-a, mas ainda não a transpiro muito.

Mas nunca é tarde para começar.

We're back from the Beja Festival and back to work.
It was a great weekend, despite the stress and the hard work of putting the exhibit together.

Exhibit which turned out really well. Our Mag #1 was presented as scheduled and we managed to see some good shows, talk to new and old friends, and eat a lot of great food.

Personally, this trip to the festival was marked by the feeling that I still have a lot of pages ahead of me and a lot to evolve in this art form, specially talking to people like the brothers Bá and Moon, who breathe and sweat sequential art all the time.
I breathe it, but I still don't sweat it that much.

But it's never too late to start.

Esta semana chegaram os exemplares da publicação conjunta do TLS e estamos bastante agradados com resultado final.
Pessoalmente, tive pena de não ter conseguido contribuir com mais material para este 1º número, mas ainda deu para fazer uma ilustração nova em cima da hora e o resto do pessoal compôs tudo num pacote bem engraçado do que se faz aqui no estúdio.

Com trabalhos de Ana Freitas, Joana Toste, João Paulo António, João Tércio, Nuno Duarte, Patrícia Furtado, Pepedelrey, Pedro Potier, Ricardo Blanco, Ricardo Cabral, Ricardo Venâncio, Rui Lacas e Sara Barbas.

E este é o início, o nº 2 está já aí ao virar da esquina.

The copies of the joint publication from TLS have arrived this week and we're quite happy with the end result.
Personally, I feel bad for not being able to find the time to contribute with more material for this 1st issue, but I still managed to do a new illustration in the nick of time and the rest of the guys put together a nice little package of what we do at the studio.

O resultado final não é o melhor, apesar de gostar da ideia, mas isto é um exercício e o trabalho real chama.

Today I went with a young version of Marvel Girl, still in her teens, busy between studies and flirting with a skinny kid in glasses in her class.

The end result didn't turn out very good, even though I like the concept, but this is an exercise and the real work beckons.

Letra G para Gateway, o teleportador aborígene que foi introduzido à série dos X-Men num arco passado na Austrália, há uns aninhos atrás, quando eu adorava tudo o que o Marc Silvestri desenhava.
Mais uma daquelas personagens obscuras que eu sempre quis desenhar.

PS - eu sei que provavelmente devia ter desenhado o Gambit, mas não suporto a personagem, para ser sincero, e como isto é um exercício para me dar gozo, vou pelos meus favoritos sempre que possível. Tough noogies! :)

Another one of those obscure characters I always wanted to draw.

O fim de semana prolongado passado na mudança de casa da minha namorada e a desinspiração que me apareceu de repente impossibilitou-me de cumprir a minha palavra de postar dois desenhos na 3ª feira (ontem), por isso, estou agora a tentar compensar o atraso da maneira que posso.

Aqui vai a Letra E para Emma Frost.
A minha versão foi buscar algumas coisas à versão original do John Byrne, e misturou-a com a actualidade dela como membro dos X-Men.

O próximo esboço vai ser uma batota, mas uma batota especial, para tentar fazer esquecer os atrasos.

The extended weekend occupied with my girlfriend's move and the creative funk which suddenly dropped on my lap made it impossible for me to make due on my word to post two drawings on Tuesday (yesterday), so I'm now trying to make up for the delay the best way I can.

Here's Letter E, for Emma Frost.
My version went partillay back to the original John Byrne version, and mixed it with the current X-Men member.

The next sketch will be a cheat, but a special cheat, to try to wipe out the last delay.

Acordei hoje com a minha costela geek e decidi meter-me num desafio bisemanal.
Partindo da ideia que explorei na minha entrada para o concurso de redesign do Wolverine no Project Rooftop, decidi criar um alfabeto de personagens dos X-Men e afins com a minha visão das personagens em questão.

A ideia é completamente sacada do Alfabeto Wolverine que o Sean Gordon Murphy está a criar na DeviantArt, por isso não é original, mas vai servir-me como desentorpecimento matinal e fonte de material para ter na net.
O trabalho não tem faltado, mas a visibilidade virtual não tem sido grande ultimamente.

Aqui está o primeiro desenho, o próximo virá na 6ª feira.

I wope up on the geek side of the bed today and decided to get myself into a bi-weekly challenge.
Starting off from the concept I explored on my entry on the Wolverine costume redesign contest over at Project Rooftop, I decided to create an alphabet of X characters with my take on the characters in question.

The idea is completely ripped off from the Wolverine Alphabet that Sean Gordon Murphy is creating on DeviantArt, so it's not an original idea but it will work as a morning warm-up exercise and give me material to post online.
I've had to work to keep me busy but the virtual visibility hasn't been that great lately.

Here's the first sketch, the next will come out on Friday.

2010 começou a todo gás.
No Lisbon Studio acordámos no novo ano com um prazo a acabar para um projecto comum a revelar daqui a uns meses.
Para esse projecto, fiquei de criar uma história curta original de oito pranchas e de escrever outra para um colega.

Entretanto, comecei a ajudar um amigo nas côres de outra curta para a Marvel Comics.

Tudo isto, e uma aventura recente na escrita de artigos que pode ver a luz do dia em breve, mais um sem número de outras possibilidades de projectos a acontecer ao mesmo tempo.

Até dia 15, vou ter mão directa ou indirecta em cerca de 27 páginas de BD nova feita aqui em Lisboa.
Estou quase a enlouquecer, mas como já escrevi aqui, quando se faz o que se gosta, parece que o cansaço não pega tão facilmente.

Bola para a frente!

2010 started at full speed.
At the Lisbon Studio we started the new year with a looming deadline on a common project due to be reavealed in a few months.
For this project, I had the challenge of creating an original eight page short story and writing another short for a colleague.

Meanwhile, I'm helping out a friend on the colors of another short story, this time for Marvel Comics.

All of this and a recent adventure writing articles which may see the light of day really soon, plus a boat load of projects and possibilities happening right now.

Come January 15th, I'll have my hand, directly or indirectly, on 27 pages of fresh sequentials all done right here in Lisbon.
I'm almost at my wit's end, but as I wrote before, when you do what you love, the stress doesn't seem to really catch on.

Onward, march!

Defier# 2 está a ganhar vida ao fim de vários meses a ter que trabalhar para pagar contas, um projecto adiado com o meu colega Jorge Coelho está finalmente a servir de aquecimento matinal para os músculos criativos, estou a escrever uma proposta com o meu colega Pedro Potier para uma publicação mensal nacional, e outra ideia minha saiu da gaveta para se juntar a esta actividade toda do fim de Verão.

Entretanto, está aí o Festival Internacional da Amadora (FIBDA), que além de ter trazido cá o CB Cebulski, também conta com estreias de livros de amigos e colegas de estúdio.
Rui Lacas (além de ser o convidado de honra do festival e responsável pela imagem do evento) lança na Amadora o 1º número da série Asteroid Fighters;
Ricardo Cabral lança o seu Israel Skecthbook;
Filipe Andrade e Filipe Pina apresentam a compilação da série BRK;
David Soares, Osvaldo Medina e Mário Freitas lançam o álbum Mucha;

Além disso, foi uma bela ocasião para conhecer três excelentes artistas canadianos ligados ao projecto Transmission X, editado agora pela Kingpin Books, Cameron Stewart, Ramon Pérez e Karl Kerschl.

Resumindo, muita coisa se passa, e muita coisa promete passar-se nos próximos meses, por isso espero ter mais material para actualizar este blog mais regularmente.

Busy times, dead blog...

The last few weeks have been filled with work and ressurecting projects.
Defier #2 is coming to life again after several months of working to pay some bills, a delayed project with my colleague Jorge Coelho is finally working as morning work out for my creative muscles, I'm writing a proposal with my colleague Pedro Potier for a monthly national publication, and another idea of mine crept out of the drawer to join the end of Summer craziness.

Meanwhile, here is the Amadora International Festival (FIBDA), which besides bringing back CB Cebulski to our shores, also is home to several new releases of books of colleagues and friends of the studio.
Rui Lacas (besides being the guest of honor and creator of the festival's look) is launching the 1st number from his series Asteroid Fighters;
Ricardo Cabral will be presenting his Israel Sketchbook;
Filipe Andrade and Filipe Pina present the compilation of their series BRK;
David Soares, Osvaldo Medina e Mário Freitas launch their album Mucha;

On top of that, it was a great opportunity three excelent canadian artists connected with the project Transmission X, now being published by Kingpin Books, Cameron Stewart, Ramon Pérez e Karl Kerschl.

In short, there's a lot going on, and a lot promises to go on in the next few months, so I hope I'll have more material to update this blog more regularly.

Killer of Demons pin-up

Lembram-se quando disse que tinha feito um pin-up para a série Killer of Demons?
Como os três números da série já estão cá fora compilados, já tive o OK para pôr a imagem online.

Aqui está ela, e é das últimas imagens em que usei este tratamento com côres lisas, e como disse num post anterior, está na altura de tentar outras coisas.
Obrigado ao Chris Yost e ao Scott Wegener pelo convite.

Num àparte só em português acerca de um trabalho meu e de colegas meus de estúdio, saiu na última 6ª-feira uma BD na edição diária do jornal "i" relacionada com o 11 de Setembro.
Por causa de uma série de mal-entendidos, o trabalho acabou por ser publicitado como "uma BD de desenhadores portugueses da Marvel".

Queria aqui esclarecer que nenhum dos meus colegas ou ex-colegas que trabalhou com a Marvel esteve envolvido neste trabalho, e que eu não estou nem nunca estive ligado contractualmente à Marvel, apenas tive um projecto com o escritor CB Cebulski, No Quarter, que neste momento está suspenso indefinidamente.

O mito dos Quatro da Marvel partiu, se bem me lembro, de uma informação errada avançada pela Agência Lusa, que se espalhou por várias outras notícias, foi desmentida vezes sem conta, mas que parece não querer desaparecer.

Neste momento, os meus projectos andam à volta do 2º número de Defier, e a pré-produção de outras ideias que tenho na cabeça.

Nada de Marvel (ou Disney).

Tenho aproveitado as poucas oportunidades que tenho para fazer trabalhos de gozo para experimentar outras técnicas de côr, uma vez que tenho achado recentemente os meus acabamentos pouco personalizados e demorados.

Aqui vai a última tentativa, mais uma peça sobre o ROM, a personagem escrita por Bill Mantlo para a Marvel. O segundo tributo volta a ser impulsionado por Jason Leivian da Floating World Comics, a quem agradeço pelo novo convite.
Infelizmente, o tributo foi adiado para 2010 para reunir ainda mais contribuições, mas o Jason deu-me o aval para colocar a imagem online, sempre ajuda na publicidade.

I've used the few opportunities I've had to do fun work to test other coloring techniques, since I've been recently looking at my treatments as too generic and time-consuming.

Here's the latest trial, another pice about ROM, the character written by Bill Mantlo for Marvel. The second tribute is once again organized by Jason Leivian from Floating World Comics, to whom I thank for the new invitation.
Unfortunately, the tribute was pushed to 2010 to gather even more contributions, but Jason has given me the go ahead to put the piece online, doesn't hurt to plug the event from the early hours.

Novidades, novidades!

Depois de umas semanas a colaborar com o pessoal da Droid_ID, eis que estreia amanhã no MOTELx a curta FRUNC.

Apareçam amanhã no Cinema São Jorge e vejam o que um grupo de geeks de terror e sci-fi faz sem orçamento e qualquer critério de gosto. :)

Noutras notícias, tentando esquivar-me a alterações de trabalhos que parecem ter mais vidas que gatos zombies e a necessidade de entrar deifinitivamente nos projectos de BD que tenho pendentes, estou em processo de mudança de casa.

Setembro é mês de mudar de vida! Neste momento, o entusiasmo da casa nova mistura-se com a ginástica mental de programar carregamentos de móveis (e da biblioteca pessoal, que não pára de crescer) e emagrecimentos da tralha que vou acumulando na minha vida.

Espero que esta mudança sirva para cortar caminho no que quero fazer daqui para a frente.

After a couple of weeks of collaborating with the guys at Droid_ID, the short FRUNC premieres at MOTELx.

In other news, trying to dodge jobs that seem to have more lives than zombie cats and the need to finally dive into pending cimics projects, I'm in the process of moving into a new home.

September is the month for life changes! Right now, I'm stuck between the enthusiasm of the new home and the mental gymnastics of programming furniture drop-offs and slimming down all the junk I've been gathering in my life.

I hope this move will get me back on track to what I really want to do from here on end.

Para quem estiver interessado, tenho uma entrevista numa publicação online sobre Artes chamada The Art Playground Magazine, dirigida por Chema Mansilla, a quem agradeço o convite.
Esta entrevista foi dada no princípio deste ano, enquanto acabava o 1º número do Defier, mas só há pouco tempo é que foi posta online.

A entrevista serviu para falar sobre influências, motivações e experiências de trabalho. Gostei do resultado final, em especial de estar ao lado de tantos talentos, um dos quais o meu colega Nuno Plati, que também tem uma entrevista nesta edição.

To whomever's interested, I have an interview on an online publication about Arts called The Art Playground Magazine, directed by Chema Mansilla, who I thank for the invitation.
This interview was made at the beggining of the year, while I was finishing the 1st issue of Defier, but it's only been posted recently online.

The interview talks about influences, motivations and work experiences. I like the end result, specially being alongside so many talented people, one being my colleague Nuno Plati, who is also featured in this edition.

Estou de volta da minha semana de férias com uma cabeça fresca e com vontade de trabalhar. Pela primeira vez em anos consegui não levar preocupações de trabalho na bagagem e pude simplesmente relaxar com a família, o que para mim é uma novidade.

Falando em novidades, e voltando ao último post, descobri ao voltar que fiquei no podium do concurso do Project Rooftop, o que foi uma bela surpresa.
A notícia inspirou-me a repegar no tema para os próximos aquecimentos diários e posso vir a postar aqui mais redesigns de outros X-Men, só pelo gozo. Vamos ver o que sai.

Entretanto, estas próximas semanas vão ser de colaboração com a Droid_id num novo projecto a revelar mais para a frente.

Hora de trabalhar.

I'm back from my vacation week with a fresh mind and some will to work. For the first time in years I managed to avoid taking work stress on my luggage and just relaxed with the family, which is new to me.

Speaking of new (or news), and going back to the last post, I found out coming back that I made the podium on the Project Rooftop contest, which was a nice surprise.
These news inspired me to go back to that theme for the next daily warm-ups so I might post some more X-Men redesigns here, just for fun. We'll see what comes out.

Meanwhile, these next couple of weeks will have me collaborating with Droid-id on a new project to be revealed later on.

Back to work.

Peço desculpa pela falta de posts aqui no blog, mas os últimos tempos têm sido (bem) preenchidos com trabalhos encomendados que pagam as contas mas não são postáveis, por isso não tem havido muito tempo para as outras coisas, as coisas que dão gozo à vida.

Mas, com os compromissos cumpridos e fechados, está na altura de tirar uma semana de férias com a família e recarregar baterias para o que aí vem.

Deixo-vos com uma das últimas coisas que fiz para me divertir, uma contribuição para o site Project Rooftop.
Ainda não sei se passou aos finalistas escolhidos, mas cansei-me de esperar pelo resultado e aqui está.

I apologize for the lack of posts on this blog, but the latter times have been (well) full of paying jobs that cover the bills but aren't postable, so I haven't had a lot of time for the other things, the things that make life fun.

But, with all commitments done and closed, time to take a family week off and recharge my batteries for what's to come.

I leave with one of the last fun things I've done, a contribution for the site Project Rooftop.
I still don't know if it was picked as a finalist or not, but I'm tired of waiting for the results and here it is.

Um mês depois, tempo de fazer uma actualização neste blog.
Tenho estado ocupado com trabalhos para pagar contas e que ao mesmo tempo garantem o nível de stress e desespero suficientes para querer fugir mais uma vez para o branco de uma página de BD e para um mundo em que as regras são controladas por mim e não outros.
Por causa destes compromissos tenho adiado os trabalhos no segundo volume do meu projecto Defier e de outras aventuras, mas espero inverter essa situação dentro em breve, para bem da minha sanidade mental.

Entretanto, nem tudo são más notícias.

Recentemente, em seguimento da contribuição para o Atomic Robo, fiz também um pin-up para o outro projecto do Scott Wegener, Killer of Demons, escrito por Christopher Yost e editado pela Image Comics, pin-up que coloco aqui quando puder.

Ainda, no próximo fim de semana vou estar no Festival Internacional de BD de Beja a apresentar o 1º capítulo do Defier e a divertir-me com o pessoal, o bom tempo (espero eu) e a boa vida do Alentejo.
É o segundo ano que o estúdio vai em digressão para Beja e, depois de encontrar por lá o Dave Mckean no ano passado, acabei de saber hoje que este ano o Craig Thompson vai lá estar a dar autógrafos e a apresentar originais.
O próximo fim de semana promete!

Por enquanto é tudo. Estou a fazer os possíveis por me livrar dos “compromissos comerciais” para poder me poder concentrar no que me dá gozo mais à frente.

One month later, time to update this blog.
I've been busy with jobs to pay the bills and which, at the same time, ensure the right level of stress and despair to make me want to run away into the white of a sequential page and into a world where the rules are mine and not anyone else’s.
Because of these commitments I’ve been postponing the progress on the second volume of my project Defier and of other endeavours, but I hope to turn that around soon, for the sake of my mental health.

Meanwhile, not all bodes ill lately.

Recently, following my contribution to Atomic Robo, I also made a pin-up for another project from Scott Wegener, Killer of Demons, written by Christopher Yost and published by Image Comics, which I’ll post here when possible.

Also, next weekend I’ll be at the International Comics Festival of Beja presenting the first chapter from Defier and having fun with the friends, the good weather (I hope) and the Alentejo good life.
This is the second year the studio travels down to Beja and, after bumping into Dave Mckean last year, I’ve just learned that Craig Thompson will be there signing books and presenting originals.
Next weekend promises to be good!

That’s it for now. I’m doing what I can to ditch these “commercial commitments” to get to the good stuff later on.
I’ll be back in a week with photos from Beja.

Há algum tempo atrás, tive a oportunidade de contribuir com um pin-up para o comic Atomic Robo, criado por Brian Clevinger e Scott Wegener e publicado pela Red 5 Comics.

Há dias, o Scott deu-me o aval para partilhar o pin-up na net, por isso aqui está.
Curti fazer esta imagem, e pode ser que hajam mais novidades relacionadas no futuro.

E continuamos com o tema exposições.

Começa hoje à noite uma exposição do meu colega Jorge Coelho no Espaço Crew Hassan com pranchas de histórias curtas que ele tem feito nos últimos anos.

A exposição chama-se "Soltas" e vai estar patente até dia 22 de Abril.

Se querem ver boa BD em português, dêem um salto à Crew Hassan, na Rua das Portas de Sto Antão, nº 159.

Esta parece ser a altura das exposições. Desta vez, a título individual.

A quem estiver em Lisboa no próximo dia 4 de Abril, fica o convite para a inauguração da mostra de originais do primeiro livro do meu projecto de BD, DEFIER, e lançamento oficial em Portugal deste e do livro MOCIFÃO de Nuno Duarte e Untxura, os dois publicados pelas Edições El Pep.

Quem estiver interessado, pode passar pelo Espaço Chili, na Rua dos Fanqueiros nº 174 1º Esq, por volta das 17h, para assistir ao lançamento dos dois livros e a uma sessão de autógrafos dos três autores (eu, Nuno Duarte e Untxura).

No evento, será também apresentado por David Soares o livro PRISON STORIES, editado pela Mmmnnnrrrg.

A exposição estará patente até dia 18 de Abril, 2ª a 6ªfeira, das 12:30 às 20:00.

PUSH - Expo Colectiva na Restart

Para o pessoal aqui de Portugal:

Começa hoje uma exposição colectiva na Restart com trabalhos meus, do Ricardo Tércio, João Lemos e Nuno "Plati" Alves, mais ou menos relacionados com a experiência de tentar vingar em BD fora das nossas fronteiras.

Quem estiver interessado em visitá-la e ver trabalhos novos e velhos, tem até dia 3 de Abril para aparecer na escola de Audiovisuais e Comunicação Restart, no Parque das Nações, naquele edifício à direita do Pavilhão de Portugal.

Está em aberto a hipótese de haver uma palestra, ou algo do género no dia 2, mas qualquer novidade será posta aqui no blog.

Para quem ainda se lembra de umas ilustrações que fiz há quase um ano atrás para levar à ComicCon de Nova Iorque, agora elas estão à venda no Espaço da Chili Com Carne.
O espaço é novinho em folha e situa-se na Rua dos Fanqueiros, nº 174 1º Esq. Podem, entre outras coisas, encontrar o catálogo da El Pep, incluindo os primeiros exemplares do Defier #1.

Se se esqueceram da prenda no Dia dos Namorados (ou quiçá de Natal), porque não oferecer um conjunto de ilustrações incríveis e originais?

Fomos a Angouleme e voltámos com algumas histórias para contar, mas isso fica para um próximo post.

Hoje é dia de aniversário, o meu mais concretamente. Hoje faço 31 anos e, apesar de uma pequena constipação trazida de França (sou fino, só coisas importadas...), e de não ter grande paciência para organizar comemorações a uma 5ª feira, o espírito está porreiro e encontro-me a escrever o que falta do nº 2 de Defier.
Conto começar as pranchas a andar na próxima semana. Nada de parar para respirar, há muita coisa a melhorar na minha técnica e no meu storytelling. Defier é um trabalho de aprendizagem e quanto mais depressa eu aprender melhor me torno, por isso é tempo de voltar à carga.

Num àparte, hoje cheguei ao estúdio para encontrar uma prenda espectacular, cortesia do Mestre Jorge Coelho.

We went to Angouleme and came back with some interesting stories, but that's for another post.

Today is a birthday, mine, to be more exact. I'm 31 today and, apart a minor cold I brought from France (I'm fancy, only imported stuff for me...), and not having the patience to organize a celebration on a Thursday, my spirits are high and I'm now writing what's left of Defier #2.
I plan on starting the page work next week. There's no time to waste, there's too much to improve in my technique and on my storytelling.
Defier is a learning job and the faster I learn the better I get, so it's time to get back into it.

As a sidenote, I arrived at the studio today to find a great gift, courtesy of Master Jorge Coelho.

Nº 1 Pronto | #1 Ready

Finalmente, o primeiro número do meu projecto, Defier, está terminado, assim como todo o trabalho de pós-produção.
A experiência tem sido cansativa, mas, ao contrário de trabalhos recentes, o resultado tem sido muito compensador.
Pepe, Sérgio e Jorge, um grande obrigado pelo esforço na paginação do livro.

Não há nada (mesmo nada) como fazer o que se gosta e aprender com isso.

Agora, tudo depende do tempo que demorar a impressão, mas o prazo aperta bastante e corremos o risco de não haver exemplares para vender em Angouleme. Façam figas, por favor.

Seja como for, o livro está feito e no pior dos cenários, estará à venda em Fevereiro, por isso continuem a visitar o blog para saber quais os locais de venda ou como encomendá-lo.

Tempo de preparar o segundo número antes de curtir a viagem a França e mesmo que não tenha o livro na mão lá, a festa da comitiva portuguesa (acho que somos uns 12, se não me engano) está garantida.
Assim que voltar no princípio de Fevereiro, é hora de voltar ao estirador para mais 32 pranchas de história.

Isto não pode parar. A Caixa de Pandora foi aberta e não há meio de fechá-la.

Finally, the first number of my project, Defier, is finished, as well as all of the post-production work.
The experience has been very tiring, but, unlike recent jobs, the result has been very rewarding.
Pepe, Sérgio and Jorge, a big thank you for all the effort in the packaging of the book.

There’s nothing (and I mean nothing) like doing what you love and learning from it.

Now, it all depends on the time it will take to print, but the deadline is very tight and we’re in serious jeopardy of not having the issues ready to sell in Angouleme. Cross your fingers, please.

Anyway, the book is done and worst case scenario, it will be out in February, so keep coming back to the blog to know where it will be for sale and how to order it.

Time to prepare the second issue before enjoying the trip to France, and even if I don’t have the book in my hand there, the Portuguese party is guaranteed there (I think we’ll be up to 12 guys there).
As soon as I return home at the start of February, it’s time to go back to the drawing board to bust out 32 pages more of story.

This thing cannot be stopped. We’ve opened Pandora’s Box and there’s no way of closing it.

Defier Preview

É 1 de Janeiro, feriado, a festa de despedida de 2008 foi grande e a ressaca hoje foi enorme, mas não há tempo a perder.

Por isso, de volta ao trabalho.

Conforme prometido, aqui vão novidades para dar as boas-vindas ao novo ano.
As primeiras pranchas do primeiro capítulo do meu projecto.

Ao longo das próximas semanas, vou revelando mais coisas, mas para já tenho que acabar tudo dentro do prazo.

A Meio | Half Way

Os últimos tempos têm sido consumidos pelo trabalho na minha história e, apesar do esforço, o livro tem corrido que nem um louco para a meta sem olhar para o lado e quase sem distracções.
Os lápis das primeiras 32 páginas estão praticamente acabados, e já começam a haver artes finais e cinzentos a aparecer no computador, mas ainda falta muito trabalho pela frente.

Queria aproveitar o momento para pedir desculpas a quem não tenho falado, e aos amigos que não me põe os olhos em cima há meses.
Eu sei que tenho estado ausente, mas o ano tem sido atribulado, e este trabalho é o que me tem mantido a cabeça no lugar. Assim que acabar, prometo que volto à vida, se estiverem desse lado.

Por enquanto, uma imagem para mostrar como andam as coisas.

Lately, my time has been consumed by the work on my story and, although tiring, the book has been running like a madman for the finish line with looking to the sidesand nearly without distractions.
The pencils for the first 32 pages are pratically done, there's some inking going on too, and already some greys are coming up on my computer, but there's still a lot of work to be done.

I'd like to take the moment to say sorry to the people I haven't got in touch with and the friends who haven't seen me in months.
I know I've been absent, but this has been a rough year and this work is the only thing keeping my head together right now. As soon as I'm done, I promise I'll come back to life, if you're still on that side.

In the meantime, a picture to show you how things have progressed.

Yesterday, I forgot to give my congratulations to my studiomate Sara Barbas for winning the award for Best Young Portuguese Director at Cinanima 2008 with her 2D animation short "Wherever You Go, There You Are".

Aquecimentos | Warm-ups

Aquecimento matinal, para soltar a imaginação e os músculos criativos.
Como se pode ver pela sujidade, segundas-feiras são sempre uma seca para começar a trabalhar decentemente.

Voltámos à mitologia, para desenjoar da história em produção.

Falando da história que comecei há dias, as primeiras pranchas estão a sair a um bom ritmo e o resultado está a motivar-me bastante para chutar a bola para a frente.
Nos próximos dias tenho novidades.

Morning warm-up, to loosen up the imagination and the creative muscles.
As you can see from the messiness, mondays are always a drag to start working properly.

We're back on mythology, to change the tone from the story currently in production.
Speaking of the story I've atrted days ago, the first pages are coming out with a nice rythm and the result is getting me pretty eager to push on through.
I'll have updates in the next days.

Chegámos a Novembro, o frio chegou, coisas têm acontecido, e antes de falar no assunto que me leva a escrever mais um post no blog, queria só deixar aqui três recados:

Primeiro - ao meu colega de estúdio João Lemos que fez ontem 31 anos. Estava para te chamar velho, mas lembrei-me que daqui a uns meses apanho-te, por isso, ficam só os Parabéns. :)

Segundo - ao também meu colega Rui Lacas que ganhou ontem dois prémios no Festival de BD da Amadora pelo seu albúm "Obrigada Patrão". Já estava mais que na altura de se reconhecer o talento de um dos autores mais prolíficos e consistentes dos últimos anos aqui no nosso quintal.

Terceiro - a todos os que querem estar ou estão já ligados à ilustração nacional. Queria chamar a atenção para a recente criação do CLIP, Clube dos Ilustradores de Portugal, que vai procurar trazer alguma união e informação a um meio ainda muito desgarrado. Parabéns ao Ricardo Antunes pela iniciativa de tentar tirar os ilustradores portugueses das suas respectivas “tocas” para começar a falar a uma só voz. Apareçam no fórum, comuniquem connosco e ajudem o movimento a crescer.

Agora, o tema central deste post é o seguinte: começa amanhã o prazo que dei a mim mesmo para trabalhar no meu primeiro livro, que, se tudo correr bem, estará pronto no princípio do próximo ano.
Este vai ser um projecto pessoal, a preto a branco, e (espero eu) o primeiro capítulo de uma história maior. O plano é manter este blog actualizado na medida do possível em relação ao andamento do processo, por isso peço-vos que voltem cá de vez em quando para verem como andam as coisas.

We’re in November, it’s cold, things are happening, and before addressing the issue behind this latest post, I just wanted to leave three notes:

First – to my studio mate João Lemos who turned 31 years old yesterday. I was about to call you an old man, but since I’m months away from catching up with you, I’ll just say Happy Birthday. :)

Second – to another one of my studio mates, Rui Lacas, who just won two awards at the Amadora Festival for his album “Obrigada Patrão”. It was about time that there was some acknowledgement to the talent of some of the most prolific authors in recent years on our little turf.

Third – to all who are or want to be linked to the illustration scene in Portugal. Just calling your attention to the recent creation of CLIP, Club for the Illustrators of Portugal(roughly translated), which will try to bring some unity and information to a medium still too dispersed. Congratulations to Ricardo Antunes for his initiative of trying to pull the Portuguese illustrators out from their respective “rocks” to start talking in one single voice. Come by the forum, talk to us and help the movement grow.

Now, the central topic: starting tomorrow, I’m starting work on my first sequential book, which, if things go smoothly, will be ready at the start of next year.
This will be a black and white personal project, and (I hope) the first chapter of a bigger story. The plan is to keep the blog updated when possible about the way work is rolling along, so I ask you to keep checking this place once in a while to see what’s going on.

Fui informado pelo pessoal da Droid-id que o videoclip dos Terrakota em que colaborei, É Verdade, foi distinguido no Festival Internacional de Vídeo Musical Vimus 2008 com os prémios MTV: Brand New (por melhor vídeo na competição nacional) e com o Prémio Especial de Juri do Vimus.

O Rei | The King

Há umas semanas atrás, comprei (e li quase de uma assentada) o livro de Mark Evanier, "King of Comics", sobre a vida e obra do grande e já falecido Jack Kirby.

Acontece que hoje é o dia de aniversário do Rei, por isso aqui fica um pequeno tributo ao homem que inspirou tantos de nós que crescemos com comics e coisas de super-heróis.

Eu queria fazer disto um processo completo, cores incluídas, mas o trabalho ainda aperta e não me possibilitou colorir o desenho a tempo de post, por isso mostro só os lápis e a arte-final (curiosamente, a primeira arte-final a tinta que faço em anos...).

A couple of weeks ago, I bought (and read almost in a single seating) Mark Evanier's book, "King of Comics" about the life and work of the late great Jack Kirby.

As it turns out, today is the King's birthday, so here's a litte tribute to the man who inspired so much of us who grew up on comics and superhero shenanigans.

I wanted this to be a complete step-by-step, colors included, but work didn't allow me to color this in time for this post, so I'm posting only pencils and inks (incidentally, the first inks I've done in years...).

Que Férias? | What Vacations?

Ultimamente, tem sido impossível vir a este blog para fazer actualizações, fruto do trabalho que tenho tido em mãos nos últimos meses, que está a demorar mais do que planeei.
Mas, lentamente, as coisas vão sendo resolvidas e daqui a uns meses, o resultado de todas as minhas dores de cabeças e esforços vão aparecer algures num palco perto de vocês.

Esta altura costuma ser vazia de notícias e actividade de qualquer tipo, mas não para mim. 2008 será mais um ano sem férias, sem descanso, com uma má notícia pessoal, mas com planos para começar a trabalhar num projecto pessoal de BD assim que puder arrumar de vez este trabalho em curso.

Entretanto, e numa celebração bastante atrasada, muito obrigado pelas 40.000 visitas. :)

Lately, it's been impossible to come to this blog for updates, due to the work that's been keeping me busy for the last months, which is taking much longer than I had planned.
But, slowly, things are getting into place and in a few months, the outcome of all of my headaches and efforts will be appearing somewhere in a stage near you.

This time is usually a slow time for news and activity of any kind, but not for me. 2008 will be another year without vacations, without rest, with a bad personal news, but with plans of picking up a personal project in comics, just as soon as I wrap up this ongoing job.

Meanwhile, and in a very late celebration, much thanks for the 40.000 visits. :)

IV Festival de BD de Beja | 4th Comics Festival of Beja

Este fim-de-semana, o pessoal do estúdio vai andar pelas ruas de Beja, pela ocasião do IV Festival Internacional de BD.

O plano é ver bons trabalhos, duas exposições de membros do estúdio (João Lemos e Pepe D'elRey), uma festa El Pep/Ballroom Beasts na noite do dia 10, muito álcool, boa comida, alguma conversa de BD à mistura, apanhar um pouco de sol, divertir-me com amigos no Alentejo, e preparar-me para os trabalhos que vêm aí.

Mais novidades para a semana...

This weekend, the studio gang will hang out on the streets of Beja, to attend the 4th International Comics Festival.

The plan is to see good works, two exhibits from our studio members (João Lemos and Pepe D'elRey), an El Pep/Ballroom Beasts party on the 10th, a lot of alcohol, good food and some shop talk thrown into the mix, catch a little sun, have fun with my friends in Alentejo, and get ready for the jobs that are coming my way.

Aqui está finalmente o post pós-NY ComicCon. Um post #0, porque para já não tenho muito tempo para fazer um relato completo da viagem e da convenção.

Espero ir desvendando mais coisas ao longo das próximas semanas, mas por enquanto, fica aqui uma lembrança.

Entre as pessoas que conhecemos na convenção, destaco Damian e Denzil, dois irmãos que foram o máximo quando estiveram na nossa mesa, ao ponto de pedirem uma foto com os dois Ricardos.
Infelizmente, Denzil não conseguiu aparecer na altura da foto, porque estávamos no inferno do fim da convenção (como podem ver pela minha cara de cansaço), mas aqui fica um abraço aos dois pelo apoio e os elogios.

Here's the not-so fresh post-NY ComicCon update. Consider this post #0, because I don't have much time to do a full report of the trip and the convention.

I hope I can unfold some details over the next weeks, but for now, here's something.

From all the people we met at the con, two of the coolest were Damian and Denzil, two brothers who were the nicest guys when they dropped by our table, to the point of requesting a picture with the two Ricardos.
Unfortunately, Denzil didn't make it to the photo, since this was taken at the Pandemonium that was the end of the con (as you can see by my tired expression), but I wish all the best to the two of them for their support and compliments.
