Ven's SuperHero Sketchbook

Uma pequena chamada de atenção para um blog meu que tem evoluído lentamente e que serve como escape para as minhas fantasias "super-heroescas" (se isto não for uma palavra, avisem-me).

Actualizado esporadicamente, este sítio vai contendo esboços antigos e recentes, coisas acabadas e por terminar, ideias e memórias da minha já longa relação com a Banda Desenhada de Super-Heróis.

Trabalho, Só Trabalho... | Work, Always Work...

As últimas semanas têm sido meio vertiginosas, com trabalhos, stresses e oportunidades a aparecerem de todos os lados.

Aqui fica uma colaboração com a organização Muda Lisboa, do meu amigo Paulo Prazeres, o cartaz para a mega-celebração do espírito de rebelião saudável, a acontecer no dia 24 de Abril, em três sítios diferentes da Rua Nova do Carvalho, no Cais do Sodré.

Dia 24, HÁ REVOLTA NO CAIS, e estão todos convidados a aparecer por lá!

The last few weeks have been pretty intense, with jobs, stress and opportunities coming up from everywhere.

Here is a collaboration with the Muda Lisboa organization, from my friend Paulo Prazeres, the poster for the mega-celebration of the healthy spirit of rebellion, scheduled for the 24th of April, in three different venues of Rua Nova de Carvalho, on the Cais do Sodré area.

Entretanto, trabalha-se em ilustrações para a Men's Health enquanto se recupera das filmagens do novo vídeo dos Blasted Mechanism para o single "Battle Of Tribes", nas Minas de São Domingos. Foi um fim-de-semana de trabalho intenso, mas uma experiência que tão cedo não esqueço. Não documentei um terço do que devia têr feito, mas aqui fica uma foto de bastidores da bela dançarina Sylvia Rijmer a mostrar a pintura que lhe fiz para as filmagens.

Meanwhile, one works on illustrations for Men's Health while trying to recover from the shooting of the new Blasted Mechanism vidoe for the single "Battle Of Tribes", on the Minas de São Domingos location. It was a weekend of very hard work, but it's an experience I won't forget anytime soon. I documented about a third of what I sould have, but here's a photo of the beautiful dancer Sylvia Rijmer showing off the painting I did on her for the video.

O Fim Está Próximo | The End Is Nigh

Nesta época de eclipses lunares, o Salazar a ganhar o concurso dos Grandes Portugueses e o Benfica a um passo de se chegar à frente do campeonato, eis que aparece mais um sinal do Apocalipse... João Lemos (finalmente) criou um blog com trabalhos seus.

Esperam-se as pilhagens de lojas, o pânico nas ruas, o Mar a abrir-se em dois e o sangue a cair do céu e todas essas tretas bíblicas para breve.


In this time of lunar eclipses, Salazar winning the Great Portuguese (or whatever the show's title translates to into english) and Benfica a step away from taking the lead in the championship, here is another sign of the Apocalypse, João Lemos (finally) opened a blog with his work.

Expect massive pillagings, panic on the streets, the Sea parting in two, raining blood and all that biblical crap very soon.

Dia B | B Day

Hoje é o dia da apresentação oficial dos Blasted Mechanism com um concerto na Aula Magna, e de certa forma, o culminar e o tira-teimas do meu trabalho com a banda (pelo menos para este álbúm), por isso deixo aqui algumas das fotos que figuraram na reportagem do Blitz, gentilmente cedidas pelo fotógrafo Hugo Lima.

Para quem não viu ainda o vídeo para o single "All The Way", aqui fica também.

Today is the day Blasted Mechanism officially present their new image in concert on Aula Magna, which in a way, marks the end and the final test to my work with the band (for this album, at least), so I'm posting here some of the pictures published on the Blitz article, courtesy of Hugo Lima.

To those of you who haven't seen the video for the single "All The Way", here it is too.
By the way, any comment on the show and the costumes is very much welcomed on this Blog, so come back to this place and give your opinion.

Nova Entrevista | New Interview

Ontem saiu na revista semanal Sábado uma entrevista com os Quatro (os tais do dito "Estúdio da Bica") sobre o trabalho que estamos a fazer para os "States".

Aqui vai um grande agradecimento à Susana Lúcio pelo interesse na nossa empreitada e pelo talento para conseguir enfiar uma viagem atribulada a França, o relato dos primeiros contactos com a indústria americana e as histórias pessoais de cada um em quatro páginas de reportagem.

No caso de não gostarem da entrevista, sempre têm um livro à borla e acesso às fotos do episódio psicótico da (careca) Britney Spears, o que já por si vale os € 2,75 que custa a revista.

Yesterday, the weekly magazine Sábado published an interview with the Quatro guys (those guys from the so called "Bica Studio") about the work we're doing for the States.

I'd like to thank Susana Lúcio for her interest in our endeavour and for the talent to cram a troubled car trip to France, the report of the early contacts with the american industry and the personal histories of each of us into the four pages of the article.

Just in case you don't like the interview, you can always get a free book and the photos of the psychotic episode of (the bald) Britney Spears, which in itself is bound to be worth the € 2,75 of the magazine.

Hoje é o dia em que os novos fatos dos Blasted Mechanism são revelados na imprensa, mais propriamente, na edição deste mês da revista Blitz, por isso, já não há razão para manter as coisas em segredo.

Aqui está a imagem da capa do novo álbum, do qual já falei aqui, mas não podia mostrar por respeito ao plano de marketing da banda.
Mas como a capa já está exposta na FNAC e já circula pela Net, e os fatos estão cá fora, já posso mostrá-la aqui também.

Se quiserem vêr os fatos reais e as personagens de carne e osso, podem comprar a Blitz, nas bancas a partir de hoje, ou ligar para o Curto Circuito na Sic Radical hoje à tarde e vêr a estreia do novo vídeo para o single All The Way.

Today is the day the new look for the costumes of Blasted Mechanism is officially shown on the press, in this month's edition of Blitz magazine, so there's no reason to keep this a secret anymore.

Here is the cover illustration for the new album, which I mentioned here before, but had not shown because of the marketing plan the band had for the record.
But, since the cover is already being exhibited on the FNAC stores and is already online, and the costumes are revealed, i can now also show it here.

If you want to see the real costumes and the life-sized characters, you can buy Blitz, on the stands today, or tune in this afternoon to Curto Circuito on Sic Radical to witness the premiere of the new video for the single All The Way.

All The Way Online

Bom, acho que já se pode começar a falar sobre isto. O trabalho que me ocupou boa parte do ano passado e o princípio deste está a começar a aparecer online, e muito brevemente, aparecerá em todo o lado.

Durante o ano passado, tive à minha responsabilidade a imagem da nova geração dos Blasted Mechanism, e do novo álbum, Sound In Light, que sai para as lojas (tudo indica) a 19 de Março.

Foi um trabalho duro, extenso, mas que deu um grande gozo em fazer. Vamos ser sinceros, não é todos os dias que vêmos produtos da nossa imaginação em tamanho real e em movimento, e é isso mesmo que acontecerá dentro de 15 dias a um mês. Perdoem-me o comentário de "pai babado", mas os novos fatos, graças ao talento do Frederico Ferreira e da sua equipa, que pegaram nos meus designs e lhes deram vida, ficaram um espanto e de certeza que vão impressionar em palco.

Ainda falta um pouco para revelar mais pormenores, mas por enquanto, fiquem com uma amostra do que vem aí, no portal da banda, criado pelos meus vizinhos de cima da Desorgan.


Well, I think it's safe to start talking about this. The job which kept me busy for the better part of last year and the beginning of this one is starting to come online, and very soon, all over the place.

During last year, I had in my hands the job of working on the visuals for the next generation of the band Blasted Mechanism, and their new album, Sound In Light, due to hit the stores (I think) on March 19th.

It was a tough assignment, very harduous, but I got a great kick out of it. Let's be honest, the chance to see products of your imagination take a life of their own, life-sized even, doesn't fall on your lap everyday, and that's what's happening in a fortnight to a month from now. Forgive my "proud dad" moment, but the new costumes, thanks to the talent of Frederico Ferreira and his team, who took my designs and gave them life, are just awesome and I'm sure they'll cause an impact onstage.

It's still a bit early to show stuff, but I'll leave you with a sample of what's to come on the band's site, created by my upstairs neighbours of Desorgan.

Saiu hoje no site BDesenhada.com uma entrevista conjunta feita a mim, ao João Lemos, ao Ricardo Tércio e ao Nuno Alves sobre os nossos projectos nas Américas e sobre o "quase mítico" (grande ênfase no "quase") Estúdio da Bica.

Desde já, agradeço o convite feito pelo Nuno Pereira de Sousa, e também a sua paciência para esperar pelas respostas em meio a tanto trabalho, assim como o seu interesse pelo nosso trabalho.

There's a joint interview coming out today on the site BDsesenhada.com, done to me, João Lemos, Ricardo Tércio and Nuno Alves, about our projects in the Americas and about the "almost mythical" (big enphasis on "almost") Bica Studio.
