A partir de 5ªfeira, vamos ter CB Cebulski em Lisboa para promover o seu Chesterquest e para finalmente conhecer os seus quatro colaboradores portugueses.
Esta visita é proporcionada pela iniciativa do pessoal do Fórum Fantástico, que se realizará de 8 a 10 de Novembro no auditório Vítor de Sá, na Universidade Lusófona.
As actividades do Fórum incluirão, no dia 8, uma sessão do Chesterquest, a caça de talentos internacional que o CB tem desenvolvido para a Marvel e, no dia 10, 17:30, uma apresentação dos projectos que temos desenvolvido para a Image Comics, com a participação do CB e dos quatro ilustradores, eu, João Lemos, Ricardo Tércio e Nuno Alves.
Quem estiver na zona do Campo Grande e quiser assistir às novidades sobre os nossos trabalhos (e ver-me a tentar falar em público, o que é sempre um evento por si só), está convidado, ainda para mais uma vez que a entrada é livre.

Starting Thursday, we'll have CB Cebulski in Lisbon promoting his Chesterquest and finally getting together with his four portuguese collaborators.
This visit is comes from the iniciative of the people from Fórum Fantástico, an event taking place from November 8th to November 10th, on the Vítor de Sá auditorium in Universidade Lusófona.
The Fórum activities will include, on the 8th, a stint of the Chesterquest, the nternational talent scouting CB has been developing for Marveland, on the 10th, 17:30, a presentation of the four projects we've been developing for Image Comics, with the participation of CB and the four illustrators, myself, João Lemos, Ricardo Tércio and Nuno Alves.
Whoever's on the Campo Grande area and wants to get updates on what we're doing (and see me attempt public speaking, which is always an event in itself), is more than welcomed, being that it's a free admission.

Drain
Finalmente saiu o meu pin-up para o Drain, a tour de force vampírica do grande CB Cebulski.
Levou algum tempo a sair para as bancas, mas hoje (finalmente) arranjei a minha cópia.
Este pin-up é o meu primeiro trabalho publicado num comic americano.
Também podem ver o pin-up do meu colega Nuno Alves no mesmo número.
Vão comprar (o meu pin-up aparece no #5, mas o resto da série também é fixe) e deixem um comentário aqui ou no fórum da Image.

Novos Começos | New Beginnings
Os últimos meses têm sido pobres em actualizações neste Blog, mas ricos em mudanças e novidades.
Durante este período, tenho acabado trabalhos de todo o tipo, tive o meu PC em reparações e finalmente mudei-me para um novo estúdio, maior e com uma dinâmica diferente do anterior, mais virado para BD e storyboard.
Nesta altura de buscas de espaços para um grupo de 16 a 18 pessoas, transportes de mobiliário de um lado para o outro, limpezas e arrumações, o encaixe progressivo das várias personalidades no mesmo espaço de trabalho, directas para acabar ilustrações e a habituação às novas rotinas que o novo estúdio inevitavelmente cria, tenho andado com um acesso bastante condicionado à net (que vai continuar pelo menos durante mais um mês), o que tem tirado a minha atenção deste canto do mundo virtual.
Os próximos dias ainda vão ser de ambientação, mas as perspectivas são boas.
Mais novidades para o mês que vem.

The last few months have been poor in updates on this Blog, but rich in changes and news.
During this time, I've been finishing all kinds of jobs, I've had my PC on the repair shop and I've finally moved to a new studio, a bigger place with a different dynamic from the old one, more focused on Comics and storyboard.
In this time of searching for places to house 16 to 18 people, transporting furniture from one place to another, cleaning up and tiding up stuff, fitting progressively all the personalities in the same working space, all-nighters to finish illustrations and coping with the new routines a new studio inevitably creates, I've been having virtually no access to the web (a situation to continue for at least another month), which has taken my mind off of this neck of the virtual woods.
I'm still in "settling in mode" for the next days, but the outlook is great.
More news next month.

De Volta Ao Trabalho | Back To Work
...E estamos de volta, mais ou menos descansados, e já com trabalho a bater à porta.
Falando de trabalho, aqui ficam umas imagens de um estilo novo que estou a usar em trabalhos de ilustração. Eu tenho experimentado gradualmente este estilo digital em alto-contraste ao longo dos últimos meses, mas só agora tenho tido a confiança para usá-lo em trabalhos oficiais.
Tem sido divertido explorar uma técnica que apresenta soluções que outras não me têm dado, é mais rápida, mais "gráfica" e mais flexível.

Speaking of work, here I leave some illustrations with a new style I've been using in illustration gigs. I've been gradually experimenting with this digital high contrast style in the past months, but I've only now do I feel confident enough to use it on actual paid work.
It has been fun to explore a technique which brings up solutions other techniques haven't shown me, that's quicker, more "graphic" and more flexible.

Férias | Vacation
Até um dia destes, pessoal. Tempo de tirar umas férias. Tempo de descansar, apanhar sol, estar com a família e pensar na vida para o resto do ano.
Espero voltar no fim do mês com uma cabeça fresca, novas ideias e novos projectos.

Os Anos Dourados | The Golden Years
Hoje bateu-me a nostalgia ao vir para o estúdio, com hip hop brasileiro a tocar nos meus ouvidos e sol nos meus olhos, enquanto apanhava o comboio para vir trabalhar. Voltei uns anos atrás, a um período entre 1998 e 2003, à altura em que o miúdo tinha planos e ideias sobre como salvar o mundo, mas não sabia por onde começar. À altura em que não tinha telemóvel, odiava a ideia de trabalhar com computadores e planeava evoluir do Desenho para a suprema arte da Agricultura algures numa quinta escondida no Alentejo. Depois de ficar famoso como artista, claro.
Coitado do miúdo. Era maluco, mas até o curtia. :)

Nostalgia struck me today as I came to the studio, with brasilian hip hop playnig in my ears and the sun in my eyes, as I caught the train to come to work.
I went back a couple of years, to a period between 1998 and 2003, to the time where the kid had plans and ideas on how to save the world, but didn't know where to start. To the time when I had no cell phone, hated the idea of working with computers and planned to evolve from Drawing to the supreme art of Agriculture somewhere in a secluded farm in Alentejo. After becoming famous as an artist, of course.
Poor kid. He was a nutjob, but I liked him. :)

Uma Vez Mais, Com Sentimento | One More Time, With Feeling
As últimas semanas têm sido um pouco penosas no que toca a trabalho e a semana de férias que ando a prometer a mim mesmo há meses é cada vez mais necessária.
Aquele ânimo de se fazer o que se gosta está quase gasto, a imaginação foi esticada quase até ao seu limite e a cabeça pede descanso.
Falava no outro dia com uma amiga sobre o gozo que qualquer artista deve ou não ter por poder ganhar a vida a fazer o que mais gosta, ou seja, criar imagens ou conceitos e receber dinheiro por isso e sempre que tenho estas conversas lembro-me do exemplo do guloso que vai trabalhar para uma loja de doces. Os primeiros dias são sempre excitantes e recompensadores, mas tudo o que é em excesso cansa e enjoa.
Isto não acontece apenas em Arte, mas em tudo o que se passa na nossa vida. Talvez isso tenha influenciado o esboço abaixo, mas a isso já chegamos.
Para tentar combater esse cansaço e falta de gozo, fiz as coisas do costume. Praia, leitura, copos com os amigos, reler o ensaio do Paul Pope no THB Circus sobre prazos de freelancer (que sempre me põe as coisas em perspectiva e me convence a respirar fundo para novas batalhas) e voltar a desenhar puramente pelo gozo de desenhar, sem clientes, premissas estúpidas ou as ideias dos outros sobre o que eu devo fazer.
O que nos traz ao esboço que publico aqui. Estou a tentar fazer disto um exercício diário, primeiro para aquecer para os trabalhos "oficiais" e depois para descarregar ideias e disparates que me passem pela cabeça sem analizar muito as coisas.
Esperem que gostem deste primeiro esforço. Mais ou menos uma hora de desenho.

The last few weeks have been a little unforgiving when it comes to work and the week vacation I've been promising myself for months is being so badly needed right now.
That glee you get when doing something you like is almost spent, the old imagination has been stretched almost to its limit and my head needs rest.
I was talking to a friend the other day about the joy any artist should or shouldn't have, being able to make one's living doing what one likes, i.e., creating images and concepts and getting paid for it and everytime I have these conversations I end up comparing the situation with a someone with a sugar craving working on a candy store. The first few days are always exciting and rewarding, but everything that's excessive tires itself out and makes you sick.
This doesn't happen only with Art, but with everything that goes around in our lives. Maybe that had some influence on the sketch below, but we'll get to that in a moment.
To fight those feelings off, I've tried the usual things. Beachbumming, reading, drinks with friends, re-reading Paul Pope's essay on freelance deadlines on THB Circus (which always puts things in perspective and convinces me to take a deep breath to weather the new battles) and going back to drawing purely for the fun of it, without clients, stupid premisses and somebody else's idea of what I should do.
Which brings us to the sketch I'm posting here. I'm trying to make of this a daily exercise, first to warm up for the "official" jobs and to unload some ideas and gibberish that run through my mind without analysing things too much.
I hope you like this first effort. Around an hour of drawing.
