Nº 1 Pronto | #1 Ready

Finalmente, o primeiro número do meu projecto, Defier, está terminado, assim como todo o trabalho de pós-produção.
A experiência tem sido cansativa, mas, ao contrário de trabalhos recentes, o resultado tem sido muito compensador.
Pepe, Sérgio e Jorge, um grande obrigado pelo esforço na paginação do livro.

Não há nada (mesmo nada) como fazer o que se gosta e aprender com isso.

Agora, tudo depende do tempo que demorar a impressão, mas o prazo aperta bastante e corremos o risco de não haver exemplares para vender em Angouleme. Façam figas, por favor.

Seja como for, o livro está feito e no pior dos cenários, estará à venda em Fevereiro, por isso continuem a visitar o blog para saber quais os locais de venda ou como encomendá-lo.

Tempo de preparar o segundo número antes de curtir a viagem a França e mesmo que não tenha o livro na mão lá, a festa da comitiva portuguesa (acho que somos uns 12, se não me engano) está garantida.
Assim que voltar no princípio de Fevereiro, é hora de voltar ao estirador para mais 32 pranchas de história.

Isto não pode parar. A Caixa de Pandora foi aberta e não há meio de fechá-la.



Finally, the first number of my project, Defier, is finished, as well as all of the post-production work.
The experience has been very tiring, but, unlike recent jobs, the result has been very rewarding.
Pepe, Sérgio and Jorge, a big thank you for all the effort in the packaging of the book.

There’s nothing (and I mean nothing) like doing what you love and learning from it.

Now, it all depends on the time it will take to print, but the deadline is very tight and we’re in serious jeopardy of not having the issues ready to sell in Angouleme. Cross your fingers, please.

Anyway, the book is done and worst case scenario, it will be out in February, so keep coming back to the blog to know where it will be for sale and how to order it.

Time to prepare the second issue before enjoying the trip to France, and even if I don’t have the book in my hand there, the Portuguese party is guaranteed there (I think we’ll be up to 12 guys there).
As soon as I return home at the start of February, it’s time to go back to the drawing board to bust out 32 pages more of story.

This thing cannot be stopped. We’ve opened Pandora’s Box and there’s no way of closing it.

Defier Preview

É 1 de Janeiro, feriado, a festa de despedida de 2008 foi grande e a ressaca hoje foi enorme, mas não há tempo a perder.

Por isso, de volta ao trabalho.

Conforme prometido, aqui vão novidades para dar as boas-vindas ao novo ano.
As primeiras pranchas do primeiro capítulo do meu projecto.

Ao longo das próximas semanas, vou revelando mais coisas, mas para já tenho que acabar tudo dentro do prazo.

It's January 1st, a holiday, the goodbye party to 2008 was a big one and the hangover today was enormous, but there's no time to loose.

So, back to work.

As promised, here's some news to welcome the new year.
The first pages off the first chapter of my project.

During the next weeks, I'll reveal more details about this, but now I have to finish everything on time.

Boa passagem de ano, despeçam-se todos deste ano que está a acabar (e que não me vai deixar muitas saudades) e dêem as boas-vindas a 2009, que promete ser um ano cheio de acontecimentos.

A Meio | Half Way

Os últimos tempos têm sido consumidos pelo trabalho na minha história e, apesar do esforço, o livro tem corrido que nem um louco para a meta sem olhar para o lado e quase sem distracções.
Os lápis das primeiras 32 páginas estão praticamente acabados, e já começam a haver artes finais e cinzentos a aparecer no computador, mas ainda falta muito trabalho pela frente.

Queria aproveitar o momento para pedir desculpas a quem não tenho falado, e aos amigos que não me põe os olhos em cima há meses.
Eu sei que tenho estado ausente, mas o ano tem sido atribulado, e este trabalho é o que me tem mantido a cabeça no lugar. Assim que acabar, prometo que volto à vida, se estiverem desse lado.

Por enquanto, uma imagem para mostrar como andam as coisas.


Lately, my time has been consumed by the work on my story and, although tiring, the book has been running like a madman for the finish line with looking to the sidesand nearly without distractions.
The pencils for the first 32 pages are pratically done, there's some inking going on too, and already some greys are coming up on my computer, but there's still a lot of work to be done.

I'd like to take the moment to say sorry to the people I haven't got in touch with and the friends who haven't seen me in months.
I know I've been absent, but this has been a rough year and this work is the only thing keeping my head together right now. As soon as I'm done, I promise I'll come back to life, if you're still on that side.

In the meantime, a picture to show you how things have progressed.

Cinanima 2008

Ontem esqueci-me de dar os parabéns à minha colega de estúdio Sara Barbas pelo prémio ganho no Cinanima 2008 de Melhor Jovem Cineasta Nacional, com a sua curta 2D "Wherever You Go, There You Are".

Parabéns, Sarita! Mesmo saltando entre Lisboa e Bristol, deste o exemplo ao resto do pessoal ao fazer o primeiro trabalho oficial (e original) do nosso estúdio.

Yesterday, I forgot to give my congratulations to my studiomate Sara Barbas for winning the award for Best Young Portuguese Director at Cinanima 2008 with her 2D animation short "Wherever You Go, There You Are".

Congratulations, Sarita! Even jumping around between Lisbon and Bristol, you gave the example to the rest of the gang by doing the first official (and original) work on our studio.

Aquecimentos | Warm-ups

Aquecimento matinal, para soltar a imaginação e os músculos criativos.
Como se pode ver pela sujidade, segundas-feiras são sempre uma seca para começar a trabalhar decentemente.

Voltámos à mitologia, para desenjoar da história em produção.

Falando da história que comecei há dias, as primeiras pranchas estão a sair a um bom ritmo e o resultado está a motivar-me bastante para chutar a bola para a frente.
Nos próximos dias tenho novidades.


Morning warm-up, to loosen up the imagination and the creative muscles.
As you can see from the messiness, mondays are always a drag to start working properly.

We're back on mythology, to change the tone from the story currently in production.
Speaking of the story I've atrted days ago, the first pages are coming out with a nice rythm and the result is getting me pretty eager to push on through.
I'll have updates in the next days.

Primeira pedra | First Stone

Chegámos a Novembro, o frio chegou, coisas têm acontecido, e antes de falar no assunto que me leva a escrever mais um post no blog, queria só deixar aqui três recados:

Primeiro - ao meu colega de estúdio João Lemos que fez ontem 31 anos. Estava para te chamar velho, mas lembrei-me que daqui a uns meses apanho-te, por isso, ficam só os Parabéns. :)

Segundo - ao também meu colega Rui Lacas que ganhou ontem dois prémios no Festival de BD da Amadora pelo seu albúm "Obrigada Patrão". Já estava mais que na altura de se reconhecer o talento de um dos autores mais prolíficos e consistentes dos últimos anos aqui no nosso quintal.

Terceiro - a todos os que querem estar ou estão já ligados à ilustração nacional. Queria chamar a atenção para a recente criação do CLIP, Clube dos Ilustradores de Portugal, que vai procurar trazer alguma união e informação a um meio ainda muito desgarrado. Parabéns ao Ricardo Antunes pela iniciativa de tentar tirar os ilustradores portugueses das suas respectivas “tocas” para começar a falar a uma só voz. Apareçam no fórum, comuniquem connosco e ajudem o movimento a crescer.

Agora, o tema central deste post é o seguinte: começa amanhã o prazo que dei a mim mesmo para trabalhar no meu primeiro livro, que, se tudo correr bem, estará pronto no princípio do próximo ano.
Este vai ser um projecto pessoal, a preto a branco, e (espero eu) o primeiro capítulo de uma história maior. O plano é manter este blog actualizado na medida do possível em relação ao andamento do processo, por isso peço-vos que voltem cá de vez em quando para verem como andam as coisas.



We’re in November, it’s cold, things are happening, and before addressing the issue behind this latest post, I just wanted to leave three notes:

First – to my studio mate João Lemos who turned 31 years old yesterday. I was about to call you an old man, but since I’m months away from catching up with you, I’ll just say Happy Birthday. :)

Second – to another one of my studio mates, Rui Lacas, who just won two awards at the Amadora Festival for his album “Obrigada Patrão”. It was about time that there was some acknowledgement to the talent of some of the most prolific authors in recent years on our little turf.

Third – to all who are or want to be linked to the illustration scene in Portugal. Just calling your attention to the recent creation of CLIP, Club for the Illustrators of Portugal(roughly translated), which will try to bring some unity and information to a medium still too dispersed. Congratulations to Ricardo Antunes for his initiative of trying to pull the Portuguese illustrators out from their respective “rocks” to start talking in one single voice. Come by the forum, talk to us and help the movement grow.

Now, the central topic: starting tomorrow, I’m starting work on my first sequential book, which, if things go smoothly, will be ready at the start of next year.
This will be a black and white personal project, and (I hope) the first chapter of a bigger story. The plan is to keep the blog updated when possible about the way work is rolling along, so I ask you to keep checking this place once in a while to see what’s going on.

Fui informado pelo pessoal da Droid-id que o videoclip dos Terrakota em que colaborei, É Verdade, foi distinguido no Festival Internacional de Vídeo Musical Vimus 2008 com os prémios MTV: Brand New (por melhor vídeo na competição nacional) e com o Prémio Especial de Juri do Vimus.
